We have a winner! No, really, Florida has a winner!

The Sunshine State has laid claim to its 13th Powerball jackpot winner in history, and it’s a biggie: $396.9 million — a super jackpot during Super Bowl week.

The winning ticket was reportedly sold at the 7-Eleven store located at 4520 Bonita Beach Road in Bonita Springs, in southwest Florida.

Wednesday night’s drawing also produced one $1 million winner in Florida. That ticket was purchased at M&S Food Store, located at 4400 West Sample Road in Coconut Creek. The retailer will receive $1,000 for selling the winning ticket.

Players in Virginia and Ohio also matched the first five numbers.

The overall prize had climbed from the original $394 million estimate late Wednesday.

High numbers or low numbers? The Mega Millions game can be tricky.

Just three days after a series of low numbers (9-20-23-26-29) came in — just the third time since July 24, 2018 that all five were below No. 30 — the opposite effect came true.

Friday’s drawing (32-35-37-47-55) was the fourth time this year — it recently happened on May 26 — that all five white balls were No. 30 or higher.

Guess it’s true what they say: “It’s the luck of the draw.”

By the way, the only time (since the current format began) that all five white balls were No. 40 or higher was July 17, 2018 (40-41-61-66-67).

Tuesday night’s jackpot is estimated at $410 million, the 11th largest Mega Millions jackpot of all-time and the 27th largest jackpot of any kind of game played in the U.S.

It has been nearly four months since any lottery jackpot was worth this much.

The $400 million level was reached on two occasions in all of 2019.

Playing the numbers

Since Oct. 31, 2017, when the current numbers format began, the most gold ball Mega Ball numbers drawn prior to Tuesday night have been 9 and 11 and 22 (each 15 times or 5.51% of all drawings), followed by 4, 10 and 20 (each 14 times), according to USA Mega. The least drawn gold balls have been No. 8 and No. 15, only six times each (2.2%).

As for the white balls, the most-drawn numbers prior to Tuesday night have been 17 and 31 (each selected 28 times, or 10.29% of all drawings), followed by 10, 48, 62 and 70 (each 27 times, or 9.92%). The least drawn white balls have been 36 and 45 (each 11 times, or 0.8%).

How to play

Select five numbers from 1 through 70 in the upper play area (white balls), or mark the QP (Quick Pick) box and let the terminal randomly pick some or all of your numbers.

Select your gold Mega Ball number from 1 through 25 in the lower play area, or mark the QP (Quick Pick) box for the terminal to randomly select your Mega Ball number.

Each ticket costs $2.

Add another dollar for the Megaplier and you could win two to five times the consolation prize.

Match all five white balls and the gold Mega Ball to win the jackpot. Match just the five white balls and win $1 million (Two Florida ticket buyers have done that in the past two drawings), and if your ticket includes the Megaplier, you could win up to $5 million.

The odds of winning the grand prize: 1:302,575,350.

Tuesday's Mega Millions is the 11th largest jackpot of its kind. ]]>
