In Iraq, the marine Sergeant Logan (Zac Efron) finds the photo of a young woman with the message “Keep Safe X” on the back in the debris of a construction and he keeps it in his pocket. His action saves his life from a mortar fire and he believes that the girl is his guard angel that protects him.

When he returns to Colorado, he has difficulties to adjust to the civilian life with his sister’s family and he decides to seek out the woman. Logan researches the landscape and finds that the place is Hamden, in Louisiana, and he walks with his dog Zeus to Hamden.

He discovers that the woman is Beth Green (Taylor Schilling), who is the owner of the Green Kennels with her grandmother Ellie (Blythe Danner). When Logan meets Beth, he is unable to tell the reason why he had traveled to Hamden. She assumes that he wants a job that she had advertised and Ellis gives the job to Logan. Soon Logan befriends Beth’s son Ben (Riley Thomas Stewart) and becomes close to the family. But her former husband, Sheriff Keith Clayton (Jay R. Ferguson) does not want to make Logan’s life easy.

“The Lucky One” is a sweet and dramatic romance, with pleasant characters. The director Scott Hicks explores the beautiful landscapes with a wonderful cinematography. The plot is very simple and predictable, but the chemistry among Zac Efron, Taylor Schilling, Blythe Danner and the boy Riley Thomas Stewart makes the film worth. My vote is seven.

The Lucky One

While it provides the requisite amount of escapist melodrama, The Lucky One ultimately relies on too many schmaltzy clichés to appeal to anyone not already familiar with the Nicholas Sparks formula.

News & Interviews for The Lucky One

Critic Reviews for The Lucky One

After this performance no further evidence is needed of Efron’s ability to do vulnerability and puppy love – we’re ready now to see whether he can show any bite.

A tsunami of syrup and a Niagara of nonsense here in this mind-blowingly ridiculous romdram.

[Efron] sells it almost single-handedly through sheer force of scrumminess.

Romance isn’t dead, but films like this are giving it a bad name.

Even taken as simple schmaltz, ‘The Lucky One’ lacks the romantic impact of the adaptation of Sparks’s ‘The Notebook’ or even the Channing Tatum-starrer ‘Dear John’.

As long as Efron’s shirt comes off, he could play an accountant and no one in the target audience would care.

More gloopy romantic slush from the piffling pen of author Nicholas Sparks.

It’s doubtful that it will elicit a strong response either from its defenders or its detractors.

The film itself looks lush and lovely with its sun-streaked trees and autumnal tones but it doesn’t stop the film from being another addition to the slush pile.

A sappy and incredibly dull [film] designed to tug at the heart strings.

Taylor Schilling is attractive, but she-like most of the cast-battles the stilted, ham-handed dialogue and a plotline as predictable as a knock-knock joke.

The Lucky One remains remarkably endearing throughout.

U.S. Marine Sergeant Logan Thibault (Efron) returns from his third tour of duty in Iraq, with the one thing he credits with keeping him alive–a photograph he found of a woman he doesn’t even know. Learning her name is Beth (Schilling) and where she lives, he shows up at her door, and ends up taking a job at her family-run local kennel. Despite her initial mistrust and the complications in her life, a romance develops between them, giving Logan hope that Beth could be much more than his good luck charm. — (C) Warner Bros ]]>
