In a six-month investigation, PennLive found that a small group of Americans have claimed lottery tickets with extraordinary frequency.

Statisticians consulted by PennLive said many of those wins were difficult to explain by luck. Based on investigations in some states, unusually frequent wins have sometimes found them to be rooted in theft, cheating, and other schemes.

DEFYING THE ODDS: This is a related story in a series. Read parts one, two and three.

Among Pennsylvania’s most frequent winners, most of their wins are from scratch-off tickets rather than draw games. Experts say that’s particularly suspicious because scratch-off games have particularly long odds compared to draw games.

But even then, winning often on draw games isn’t easy.

To see for yourself, try our simulators for Pick 5 and Treasure Hunt. Both games were designed based off Pennsylvania Lottery odds.

Pick 5

TO WIN: Match five single-digit numbers with five randomly drawn single-digit numbers.

TO PLAY: choose your game type, choose five numbers, and then hit “play.” Or hit “randomize” to have five numbers randomly chosen for you.

Selecting “straight” as your game type means you’re betting that your numbers will match the exact order of the drawn numbers (eg. if you chose “12345” you would win if “12345” is drawn).

Selecting “box” as your game type means you’re betting that your numbers will match in any order (eg. if you chose “54321” you would win if “12345” is drawn or any combination of those numbers).

Each ticket costs $1. You can choose different numbers after hitting ‘play’.
