Dustin Johnson had one arm in the Green Jacket after charging to a four-shot lead with a magnificent third round at the Masters on Saturday.

Ten players were within one stroke starting the round, but Johnson was a class apart, in control of every facet of his game as he broke clear after almost holing his approach shot for a tap-in eagle at the par-five second.

He did not really miss a green until the final hole, where for the only time all day he was forced to call upon his deft short game to save par.

Johnson matched Jordan Spieth’s record low Masters total for the first 54 holes — 16-under-par 200 — while South Korean Im Sung-jae (68), Mexican Abraham Ancer (69) and Australian Cameron Smith (69) were equal second on 12-under.

“I am swinging well, got a lot of confidence in what I’m doing,” said the American. “I was in control of my game, hit a lot of really good shots right where I was looking.

“Tomorrow I’m going to have to do the same kind of thing. I’m still going to have to play a really good round if I want to put on the Green Jacket.”

Only two players have surrendered a bigger 54-hole lead at the Masters — Greg Norman (six shots) in 1996 and Ed Sneed (five shots) in 1979.

Rory McIlroy (2011) and Ken Venturi (1956) could not close the deal with four-stroke cushions.

The Masters 2020 LIVE RESULTS: Emotional Dustin Johnson WINS with record score – latest Augusta updates

  • Invalid Date,

DUSTIN JOHNSON has won his first Green Jacket after a stunning final day at the Masters.

But the the day wasn’t as kind to last year’s champ Tiger Woods, who hit TEN on the tricky 12th.

Follow ALL the latest updates with our live blog below.

FROM ONE CHAMP TO ANOTHER

Six-times Masters winner Jack Nicklaus has tweeted his praise for Dustin Johnson after the American became the latest to join the green jacket club.

No one has won this tournament as many times as Nicklaus so it is high praise indeed.

Barbara and I send our heartfelt congrats to @DJohnsonPGA on a Masters Tournament well played!
Dustin drove the ball fantastically. His irons were great. His putting was just rock solid. Put those together, and you win a major championship. @TheMasters

WON DIRECTION

One Direction superstar and huge golf fan Niall Horan has become the latest celeb to congratulate the victorious Dustin Johnson.

Well that was great to watch. Congratulations Dustin Johnson on an incredible week. We have seen him play solid over the years but not as solid as he did the last two days. The tears and silence in the post round interview summed it all up for me. @TheMasters champ

AUSTIN POWERS

Some amazing stories emerging from Dustin Johnson’s Masters win, but the connection between him and his brother Austin may be the best:

Dustin Johnson’s brother Austin has been his caddy since 2013.

Today, they won their first Masters together.

“I CAN’T BE CRYING”

DJ said: “It’s an unbelievable feeling to experience all this with my brother. I love him being on my bag. I wouldn’t want anyone else there.

“I had to jibe him on the last, he was tearing up and making me tear up, and I was like, I’ve still got to finish this off, I can’t be crying! But it was a lot of fun and I’ll remember this for the rest of my life.

“I don’t even know what to say any more … I’m so excited it’s hard to even talk!”

IT FITS

“The Masters to me is the biggest tournament. It’s the one I wanted to win the most.”

THE CEREMONY

And we move over to Butler Cabin, which is always the location of the strangest and most awkward trophy presentation.

Former champion Tiger Woods, low amateur at this year’s Masters Andy Ogletree and Dustin Johnson are all sat there in a semi-circle.

“WON’T BE HIS LAST”

Butch Harmon: “I know this is his first Masters but I don’t think it will be his last. He has the game for this course and he also has the putting stroke for it.”

WINNER!

Dustin Johnson is the 2020 Masters champion! Let the celebrations begin!

DJ has been utterly dominant and played the best four rounds of his life at Augusta this week. A historic -20 has seen him land his second ever major.

He hugs his brother Austin and then gets a bear hug from former Masters champ Bubba Watson.

“I always dreamt of having one of those,” Johnson says to his partner Paulina Gretzky.

JUST ONE LEFT…

Abraham Ancer (-8) rolls in for par. Sungjae Im (-15) also makes par.

Just one fella left…

THAT WALK

DJ, walking up the 72nd hole with a five-shot lead. Surely there’s no better feeling in the sporting world. He’s being applauded by a hundred or so people and just about manages to crack a smile.

One, possibly two, or even three shots away from the Green Jacket. Heck, he could triple bogey and still win. He won’t of course…

ROUND UP

Dylan Frittelli, the world number 100, finishes with a par round of 72 today. He’s ended T5 alongside Rory McIlroy on -11.

Justin Thomas is outright fourth on -12. His best ever finish.

Just DJ, Im and Ancer left out there.

IMPRESSIVE

Cameron Smith is the first player in Masters history to card four rounds in the 60s! themasters pic.twitter.com/cLRUm5f2Fs

But still didn’t win… how upsetting is that?! Just bumped into the best player in the world, in the best form of his life. Well done, Cameron.

THE FINAL HOLE

Dustin Johnson strides to the 18th and plants it straight down the middle – possibly some extra mustard on that.

17th

Dustin booms it straight down the fairway on 17. He takes a deep breath immediately after. Doesn’t show much emotion does DJ – but I suspect we’ll see some coming up shortly.

LEADERS

-11 Frittelli (17)

TWO REMAINING

DJ saunters to par on the 16th and has just two holes separating him from his first Green Jacket.

RORY OVER AND OUT

Rory McIlroy completes his round with a par.

He signs off with a 69 and 11 under-par for the week. No Grand Slam on this occasion – but had that first round been better – it could have been a different story for the Northern Irishman.

Brooks Koepka finishes on -10, Tommy Fleetwood -6.

HISTORIC

Dustin Johnson is the first player in Masters history to reach 20 under par. themasters pic.twitter.com/6X48I5q1xs

Dustin Johnson at 20 under now. Currently two clear of Masters scoring record and if he stays there would match lowest total relative to par in major history (Day at the 2015 PGA and Stenson at the 2016 Open).

-20

That’s madness. This is madness.

Dustin Johnson birdies the 15th to move to 20 under par – that’s his third on the bounce. Just a procession of excellence.

What was all that pressure on the back nine nonsense about?

Highly underrated 3rd shot by DJ on 15. 109 yards, downsloping lie and ball above his feet, inconsistent wind, PLUS wet fairway grass lying straight into grain. Oh and leading Masters on Sunday. Other than that pretty simple.

RAHM MOVES UP

Jon Rahm has gone eagle-birdie at 15 and 16 to move to -10. I think he was second-favourite to win at the start of the week.

EH?!

Well how’s he done that? Having found the drink and nearly taken a few heads off – Cameron Smith makes birdie on the 15th. He’s outright second now on -15.

And HELLO to Justin Thomas! The world No.3 won’t be troubling DJ today but he’s enjoying his best ever finish at Augusta.

The American sinks an eagle on the 15th to take him to -13 and -3 on the day.

GREEN JACKET INCOMING

“OH S***!”

Yep, that’s about right.

Cameron Smith looks to attack the 15th but he’s hooked it and managed to find the only spectators on course. He barks: “Oh s***”, which I think was his effort at warning the good folks of Augusta.

The Aussies challenge is over.

EXHIBITION

It’s fast turning into an exhibition for Dustin Johnson, folks. He’s been peerless since holes four and five.

He’s just pumped a 324-yard drive down the 14th and then wedges to within six feet. In with a chance of an eagle… CLOSE! Not quite but that’s going to be birdie with four holes remaining.

He’s only the second player to reach -19 at any point during Masters.
