2 million lottery winner

Farwell man ‘stunned’ after winning $2 million Powerball jackpot

LANSING, MI — A Farwell man says he ventured outside of his normal lottery routine and ended up winning a $2 million Powerball prize.

“I play usually play Fantasy 5 but decided to buy a Powerball ticket to that day,” said Robert Mihalyfi, 65. “I checked the ticket the next day and I was stunned!”

Mihalyfi matched all five white numbers drawn — 14-18-36-49-67 — for the drawing on Sept. 30 while also playing the Power Play option to increase his winnings to $2 million. He bought the ticket at KC’s Lake Thirteen Party Store, located at 587 West Surrey Road in Farwell.

“It’s an amazing feeling to win, and it means a more secure and comfortable retirement for my wife and me,” Mihalyfi said. “We’ll share this with our family, and then put the rest towards our retirement.”

Mihalyfi recently visited Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim his prize.

The last player from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot was Cristy Davis of Waterford who won $70 million playing Powerball in February. With her winnings, Davis said she planned to buy a new house and car.

And while she was a lucky winner, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Hartland last year went unclaimed. The ticket was purchased at the Speedway in Hartland, but the winner never came forward to claim the prize. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.

LANSING, MI — There’s a saying about a “happy wife makes a happy life.” For a Macomb County man his wife and his life just got much more happier after he won a $2 million jackpot playing the Michigan Lottery’s Lucky 7′s instant game.

“I stopped to put air in my wife’s truck tire and I needed some change for the machine,” said the 57-year-old player who chose to remain anonymous. “I went in to get change and asked for a $10 Lucky 7′s ticket. The clerk handed me the $20 ticket by mistake.

“He offered to exchange it for me, but something told me to keep it. I am sure glad I did!”

The lucky winner bought his ticket at the BP gas station, located at 19440 East 10 Mile Road in Eastpointe. After claiming the prize at Michigan Lottery headquarters in Lansing recently, the man says he plans on using the money to buy a new home and save the remainder.

He elected to receive his prize as a one-time lump-sum payment of $1.3 million rather than annuity for the full amount.
